Located in the eastern part of Guangdong and facing South China Sea, Chenghai Shantou with an area of 345 square kilometers and 700 thousand residents, is a famous hometown of oversea Chinese. The GDP in 2002 of Chenghai reached 8.3billion yuan and the output value 20billion yuan.
Textile and clothing industry is a traditional and pillar industry of Chenghai, which takes exports as main direction and private economy as main body, has formed a new product structure focusing on woolen sweaters over the past few years of development. The output value in 2002 of the industry reached 5.4billion yuan accounting for 27% of the whole industry in Chenghai. In possession of 67.5thousand all kinds of manufacturing machines, the industry can produce 166million pieces of woolen sweaters each year, 61% of which are sold to Russian and countries in Europe, America, Middle East, and Southeastern Asia.
Chenghai woolen sweaters especially women's fashions have their unique style. Using the traditional handmade technologies of Guangdong embroidery and drawnwork, Chenghai woolen sweaters enjoys a popular market in the field of woolen sweater business. Under the flexible mechanism of private enterprises, many large-scale exemplary enterprises emerged like Hongtai and Jiamao. JinQi, HongTai, are awarded as Famous Brands of Guangdong and Wanfeng, Hongtai, Xiongye are brands promoted and recommended by Shantou city.
